After Historic Deal With Super Bowl MVP Kenneth Walker III, Seahawks Officially Part Ways With Three Pillars in GM John Schneider’s Difficult Decision
The Seattle Seahawks made a franchise-altering move Tuesday. Just hours after finalizing a record-setting five-year, $142 million contract extension with $88 million guaranteed for Super Bowl LX MVP Kenneth Walker III, general manager John Schneider confirmed the team would part ways with three key contributors, according to internal sources, in order to remain compliant with the salary cap.

The new deal makes Walker one of the highest-paid running backs in the NFL, averaging more than $28 million per season — a figure substantial enough to reshape the franchise’s entire financial structure. After totaling more than 1,800 yards and delivering a defining performance in Super Bowl LX, Seattle identified him as the cornerstone it could not afford to lose.

“When you have a player who changes the outcome on the biggest stage, you invest accordingly,” Schneider said. “But in a salary-cap system, every major investment forces adjustments elsewhere.”
According to sources within the organization, the three veterans released were instrumental during the championship run. However, the combined cap savings from those moves reportedly exceed $40 million, creating the flexibility necessary to register Walker’s new contract without breaching league limits.

League analysts view the move as bold but calculated. Rather than allocating significant cap space across multiple aging contracts, the Seahawks opted to consolidate resources around a star entering the prime of his career.
Inside the locker room, emotions are understandably mixed. The departing players left both on-field production and cultural leadership behind. Still, team leadership emphasized that sustained competitiveness requires prioritizing the future over comfort.
“We’re grateful for everything they gave this organization,” Schneider added. “But to keep this team competing for years to come, you have to make decisions before circumstances force your hand.”
For Seahawks fans, the moment carries both excitement and sacrifice. Walker remains the heartbeat of the offense, but the cost of a record-breaking extension inevitably brings change. Seattle has made its bet — and now the franchise must trust that this commitment will keep it at the top for years ahead.
