After the Eagles “disrespected” the Patriots in the A.J. Brown trade talks, New England immediately pivoted to an NFL “precious gem” – Jaelan Phillips on a $52 million deal

Internal sources indicated that the Patriots were genuinely interested in Brown, viewing him as the perfect piece for quarterback Drake Maye. However, the compensation demanded by the Eagles was considered far beyond expectations, potentially even exceeding the previous D.K. Metcalf trade. One AFC executive summarized it bluntly: “New England is not going to pay an unreasonable price just to prove a point.”
Rather than entering an endless bidding war, the Patriots immediately redirected their attention to Jaelan Phillips – a former first-round pick and widely regarded as one of the most talented edge rushers of his generation. At 26 years old, Phillips is still considered by many analysts to be a “precious gem” if he can maintain his health and return to peak form.
Phillips’ career was interrupted by two major injuries: a torn Achilles in 2023 and a torn ACL in 2024. However, last season he appeared in all 17 games, recording 5.0 sacks and earning a 74.2 Pro Football Focus grade – ranking 31st among NFL edge rushers. After being traded midseason, he added 2 sacks and 27 quarterback pressures.
For the Patriots, upgrading the pass rush remains a top priority. Harold Landry and other edge contributors were steady but lacked explosiveness in crucial stretches. Phillips, with his pass-rush win rate and consistent pressure ability, could represent the missing piece needed to elevate the defense to another level.
According to Spotrac, Phillips’ projected market value stands at three years, $52 million. That figure is significant, but compared to surrendering two first-round picks for a star like Maxx Crosby, it presents a more flexible and financially responsible alternative in the long term.
Head coach Mike Vrabel recently emphasized during a press conference: “We don’t need to change everything. We need pieces that make the system stronger.” If a deal for Phillips materializes, it will not simply be a reaction to the failed pursuit of A.J. Brown – it will be a statement that the Patriots remain committed to building their contender the right way.
