Amid Injury Crisis, Bears Discover "Hidden Gem" at Wide Receiver to Solve Tough Puzzle Ahead of Packers Clash
Chicago, Illinois – December 19, 2025
The Chicago Bears head into their matchup with the Green Bay Packers at one of the most challenging moments of the season. As the NFC North race tightens, Chicago’s offense has been hit hard by injuries, with starting wide receivers Luther Burden III and Rome Odunze both ruled out. Against a familiar rival that rarely misses opportunities to exploit weakness, the Bears are being forced to search for answers in unexpected places.
And in that context, one name is quietly gaining trust inside the building: Maurice Alexander.
The absence of Burden and Odunze means DJ Moore will draw the full attention of Green Bay’s defensive game plan, while Olamide Zaccheaus, Devin Duvernay, and rookie Jahdae Walker are expected to shoulder expanded roles. But the Bears understand that leaning solely on familiar options may not be enough. To change the equation, they need an element of surprise — a player the Packers may not have prioritized in their preparation.
Alexander, 28, followed head coach Ben Johnson from Detroit to Chicago and currently resides on the practice squad. Although he did not make the 53-man roster at the start of the season, he has never been viewed internally as a temporary fix. During the preseason, Alexander flashed legitimate offensive ability with nine receptions for 71 yards and a touchdown, showing he could contribute if called upon.
More importantly, Alexander brings tactical flexibility. He has extensive experience on special teams, previously averaging 24.3 yards per kickoff return with the Lions. If he takes on the bulk of those duties, the Bears could free up Devin Duvernay to focus more heavily on offensive responsibilities, adding another layer to Chicago’s game plan.

When asked about potentially turning to lesser-known contributors against Green Bay, Johnson offered a brief but revealing response.
“He’s not here just to fill a spot,” Johnson said. “We’ve been watching how he practices and prepares for a long time. When opportunity shows up, the player who steps forward isn’t always the most talked-about name — it’s the one who’s been ready to make a difference.”
Before reaching the NFL, Alexander was a standout playmaker in the USFL with the Philadelphia Stars, recording 20 receptions for 234 yards and two touchdowns. That background reinforces the belief that he can deliver when given meaningful opportunities, even without the spotlight.
Bears–Packers games are rarely decided by the stars everyone expects. More often, the outcome hinges on unexpected moments from unexpected names. In the midst of Chicago’s injury crisis, Maurice Alexander could be the “hidden gem” the Bears are searching for — and if Green Bay relaxes for even a moment, that overlooked name could end up defining the game.
