Bears Head Coach Ben Johnson’s Patience Is Running Thin Over Chicago’s “$40 Million Debt”

In the 28–21 loss to the Green Bay Packers, Gordon re-aggravated his groin injury just minutes before kickoff, forcing him out of the lineup for the 10th time this season. His absence didn’t just weaken Chicago’s secondary; it placed another heavy burden on Johnson, who has had to reshuffle his defense week after week. For a player receiving top-tier money and expected to be a long-term cornerstone, Gordon’s on-field return has been minimal at best.

C.J. Gardner-Johnson has stepped up admirably in Gordon’s absence, recording three sacks and an interception, but the Bears understand he’s only a temporary solution. When Gordon’s extension fully kicks in next season, the expectations — and the financial burden — will only grow heavier. So far, his performance has not matched the investment.
Chicago doesn’t want to make premature judgments, but the reality is becoming harder to ignore: a $40 million player who can’t stay on the field is a liability no franchise can afford for long. The Bears need answers — and they need them soon.
