Bears Head Coach Ben Johnson’s Patience Is Running Thin Over Chicago’s “$40 Million Debt”
Chicago, Illinois – December 10, 2025
The Chicago Bears are enjoying an emotional, high-energy season, but behind the big moments lies a quiet concern that’s starting to grow louder: the future of Kyler Gordon — the cornerback who recently signed a $40 million extension yet continues to miss time due to recurring injuries. And for head coach Ben Johnson, the patience he once had in abundance is beginning to wear thin.
In the 28–21 loss to the Green Bay Packers, Gordon re-aggravated his groin injury just minutes before kickoff, forcing him out of the lineup for the 10th time this season. His absence didn’t just weaken Chicago’s secondary; it placed another heavy burden on Johnson, who has had to reshuffle his defense week after week. For a player receiving top-tier money and expected to be a long-term cornerstone, Gordon’s on-field return has been minimal at best.
During a press conference at Halas Hall, Johnson showed a rare hint of frustration — something not often seen from a coach known for his composure and steadiness.
“I’ve waited long enough to see him truly fight and show the value he brings, but these constant absences are pushing things beyond what anyone can tolerate,” Johnson said. “We’ll do everything we can to get him back — but I’m losing patience, and I need a reason to keep believing.”
C.J. Gardner-Johnson has stepped up admirably in Gordon’s absence, recording three sacks and an interception, but the Bears understand he’s only a temporary solution. When Gordon’s extension fully kicks in next season, the expectations — and the financial burden — will only grow heavier. So far, his performance has not matched the investment.
Chicago doesn’t want to make premature judgments, but the reality is becoming harder to ignore: a $40 million player who can’t stay on the field is a liability no franchise can afford for long. The Bears need answers — and they need them soon.
If Gordon can’t break out of this cycle of soft-tissue setbacks and return to his true potential, this won’t be remembered as just “an unfortunate season.” It could become one of the most costly missteps the Bears have made in years.
