Chiefs’ Injury List Swells to Season-High Ahead of Week 16
On December 19, the Chiefs confirmed a lengthy list of unavailable players for Sunday’s matchup. According to the team’s official announcement, Trent McDuffie, Leo Chenal, Jaylon Moore, Rashee Rice, Jawaan Taylor, Tyquan Thornton, Jake Briningstool, Nazeeh Johnson, and Derrick Nnadi will all be sidelined against Tennessee.
That totals seven players from the active 53-man roster, along with Briningstool and Johnson, who are still working their way back from injured reserve. When factoring in additional players already on reserve lists, Kansas City is effectively operating with a skeleton crew.
With the Chiefs officially eliminated from playoff contention and quarterback Patrick Mahomes ruled out for the remainder of the season, the approach is unsurprising. While the remaining healthy players are expected to compete with effort and pride, the organization has little incentive to rush injured contributors back onto the field with only three games left in 2025.
Throughout most seasons, players often push through injuries to stay available. At this stage, however, Kansas City appears focused on caution rather than risk, prioritizing long-term health over short-term results.
Injuries Create Opportunities for Young Talent
Among the Week 16 absences, Rashee Rice’s status is particularly notable. The wide receiver suffered a concussion in the loss to the Los Angeles Chargers, making him one of the most impactful fantasy-related injuries for fans still tracking lineups. Trent McDuffie’s knee injury is another major blow to the defense.
At the same time, those absences open the door for younger players to step into expanded roles. Rookie wide receiver Jalen Royals and rookie cornerback Nohl Williams are expected to see increased snaps against the Titans. The coaching staff has already hinted that Royals would be more involved down the stretch, and Williams could follow a similar path.
Both rookies were selected in the 2025 draft and could factor into Kansas City’s plans next season. With meaningful regular-season reps now available, this stretch provides a valuable evaluation window.
The trend extends beyond the skill positions. Undrafted offensive lineman Esa Pole has handled left tackle duties when needed, Ashton Gillotte has rotated along the defensive line, and several depth players are being pushed into action. For Kansas City, the remainder of the season has effectively become an extended audition period.
That reality represents the lone silver lining of missing the playoffs: discovering which young contributors are ready to step forward. As the Chiefs shift focus to development, the final weeks of 2025 will be about learning who can swim when thrown into the deep end.
