Cowboys Get Huge Injury News on $96 Million Former 1st Round Pick
Dallas, Texas
The Dallas Cowboys quietly delivered a major offseason update Tuesday — and it involves one of the most important pieces of their roster.
All-Pro offensive lineman Tyler Smith underwent knee surgery shortly after participating in the Pro Bowl Games, according to team sources. The procedure was described as a “cleanup” operation on his right knee, addressing an issue he managed throughout the 2025 season.

Despite the surgery, the Cowboys expect Smith to be fully cleared and ready for the team’s offseason program.
The news comes as a surprise to many fans who assumed Smith was fully healthy after his Pro Bowl appearance. However, insiders revealed he had been dealing with knee discomfort for much of the year and even dressed without playing in one game late in the season as a precaution.
At 6-foot-6 and 332 pounds, Smith has rapidly developed into one of the league’s premier interior offensive linemen. Drafted No. 24 overall in the 2022 NFL Draft out of Tulsa, he has started all 63 games of his career, earned three Pro Bowl selections, and was named First-Team All-Pro in 2023.
His consistency and physical dominance were rewarded in September 2025 when the Cowboys signed him to a four-year, $96 million contract extension — placing him among the highest-paid offensive linemen in the NFL.
Around league circles, Smith’s reputation is elite. Executives and coordinators consistently praise his power at the point of attack and his ability to overwhelm defenders once he locks on. While some critics have pointed to occasional over-aggressiveness earlier in his career, his discipline improved dramatically last season as his penalty numbers dropped significantly.

For Dallas, the update brings both relief and caution.
Relief, because the surgery was minor and not structural.
Caution, because protecting franchise cornerstones remains critical after consecutive disappointing seasons (7–10 in 2024 and 7–9–1 in 2025).
The Cowboys have invested heavily in their offensive line over recent drafts, selecting multiple first-round linemen in recent years. Smith remains the anchor of that group — the tone-setter up front and one of the few unquestioned building blocks on the roster.
If he returns at full strength this spring, Dallas’ offensive foundation remains intact.
And for a team trying to climb back into contention, that may be the most important news of the offseason so far.
