Future Legend Philip Rivers Fires Back on MNF, Responds to Cowboys Legend Troy Aikman’s Criticism of Colts’ Playoff Hopes
Indianapolis, Indiana – After a 48–27 loss to the San Francisco 49ers on Monday Night Football, future Hall of Famer Philip Rivers of the Indianapolis Colts went on live television to set the record straight and respond to controversial comments from Dallas Cowboys legend Troy Aikman. The defeat put the Colts’ playoff chances in serious jeopardy, and Aikman did not hold back, asserting that “Rivers caused the Colts to miss the playoffs.”
Rivers, 44, who returned from retirement, immediately demonstrated his unwavering mindset. Speaking on MNF, he declared confidently:
"I’ve been a part of less percentages to get in the playoffs before and still gotten in. So you won’t see me losing hope."
Throughout the broadcast, Rivers emphasized that he still believes in his team’s ability to compete, despite the challenges posed by the defensive struggles and the lopsided score. While he accepted responsibility as the team leader, he pushed back against being directly blamed for the loss, explaining that the Colts executed to the best of their ability against a highly efficient 49ers offense.

On the other side, Troy Aikman maintained a firm stance, arguing that Rivers’ decisions and performance on the field directly contributed to the Colts’ playoff struggles. Aikman highlighted that, at 44, even minor mistakes or timing issues can have outsized impacts on critical outcomes.
Rivers, however, remained calm and confident, citing his 17-year career and seven previous playoff appearances, underscoring his resilience and competitive mindset. He also backed it up with performance: completing 23 of 35 passes for 277 yards, two touchdowns, and one interception, while keeping the Colts in contention for most of the game.
Colts head coach Shane Steichen also defended Rivers, stating: “I thought he was on fire all game.” Rivers continues to represent professionalism, leadership, and determination, affirming that he will not give up on guiding the team into the playoffs, even under immense pressure from media and NFL experts.
The upcoming Week 17 matchup against the Jacksonville Jaguars will serve as the Colts’ final opportunity to prove that, under Rivers’ leadership, they can fight until the very end and maintain hope for postseason success.
