Head Coach Sean Payton Reveals the 3 Reasons He Fully Trusts OC Davis Webb and Is Handing Him Complete Play-Calling Control

Posted Feb 27, 2026

DENVER — When a head coach who has called plays for nearly two decades decides to hand over full offensive control, it is not a minor adjustment. But for the Denver Broncos, the 2026 season will mark a significant shift as head coach Sean Payton officially gives full-time play-calling duties to offensive coordinator Davis Webb.

Speaking at the NFL Combine, Payton did not hesitate to explain the decision. He laid out three clear reasons why he believes Webb is ready to lead the Broncos’ offense.

Reason No. 1: A Rare Transition From Player to Coach

Payton described the moment he realized Webb was different:

“Davis Webb is one of the few players who came right from playing to coaching. After we interviewed him, I told George Paton we can’t let him leave the building. Call the driver back and we hired him right there.”

That sense of urgency says everything. Payton did not just see potential — he saw a long-term offensive mind worth securing immediately.

Reason No. 2: Advanced Schematic Feel Beyond His Years

According to Payton, Webb possesses an exceptional “schematic feel” — the ability to sense game rhythm, anticipate defensive adjustments, and respond instinctively. In a league increasingly defined by speed and adaptability, that instinct carries enormous value.

The Broncos are aiming to build a faster, more efficient, and less predictable offense in 2026. Payton believes Webb’s natural play-calling instincts can unlock another level within the system.

Reason No. 3: Allowing Payton to Re-Focus on the Bigger Picture

After 18 seasons of personally calling plays, Payton understands that stepping back does not mean stepping aside. He will remain heavily involved in game planning and critical situational decisions, but the in-game rhythm and sequencing will now run through Webb.

This adjustment allows Payton to concentrate on overall game management, roster development, and long-term organizational direction during a crucial restructuring phase for Denver.

In an NFL where head coaches rarely relinquish offensive control voluntarily, Payton’s decision speaks volumes about the trust he has in Davis Webb.

The 2026 season will not simply represent a tactical adjustment.
It may signal the beginning of a new offensive era in Denver — with Webb holding the call sheet and Payton confidently backing the move.

Von Miller Reunites With Denver for One Final Chapter, Signs One-Day Contract to Retire a Broncos at 36, Sends Heartfelt Message to Broncos Fans.
One of the defining defensive leaders of the Denver Broncos’ championship era has officially come full circle. Von Miller signed a one-day contract with Denver to retire at age 36, closing the book on a career that flourished at Mile High and delivering an emotional farewell to Broncos fans. Miller first arrived in Denver in 2011 and quickly became a perfect fit in the Broncos’ aggressive defensive identity. His football intelligence, positional versatility and relentless motor transformed him into a cornerstone of the Broncos’ front seven during one of the franchise’s most dominant stretches. He played a pivotal role in the historic Super Bowl 50 victory—earning Super Bowl MVP honors—and later helped secure another championship in Super Bowl LVI. Those performances cemented his place in Broncos lore as a dependable playoff performer and defensive tone-setter. Though his journey later included stops in Los Angeles and Buffalo after Denver traded him during the 2021 season, Broncos Country remained the place where his identity as an elite pass rusher was truly shaped. Standing at the podium inside Empower Field at Mile High, emotion was unmistakable as he reflected on how far he had come. “I wasn’t supposed to make it this far. From being a kid chasing a dream to standing here with two Super Bowl rings, this journey was never easy. Denver didn’t just give me a chance in football. They gave me a place to belong. I’ll always carry that with me.” His words resonated deeply with Broncos Country. Miller’s story has always been about perseverance, faith and resilience. Overcoming doubt long before he ever stepped onto an NFL field, he built a career defined not just by championships, but by character. At 36, Miller walks away from the game with two Super Bowl rings, multiple playoff runs and the respect of teammates across the league. More importantly, he leaves as a symbol of what it means to embrace opportunity and rise above expectations. For Broncos fans, his retirement is not simply the end of a career. It is the closing chapter of a player who became family in Denver. And as he made clear, he will forever be proud to say he finished as a Bronco.
