Just 12 hours after officially signing with the Packers, Rich Bisaccia made the decision to part ways with kicker Brandon McManus – the disappointment following a year of severe decline in performance.
Green Bay, Wisconsin – 05/02/2026
Shortly after officially signing with the Green Bay Packers, special teams coordinator Rich Bisaccia made a controversial decision to part ways with kicker Brandon McManus. This move came after a season full of disappointment for the special teams unit, particularly following critical mistakes in the deciding game against the Chicago Bears.
Despite criticism from fans, Packers GM Brian Gutekunst defended Bisaccia’s contract extension, stating that the coach still brings positive influence to the team. However, the ongoing struggles of the special teams unit remained a significant issue that couldn't be ignored.
In the final game against the Bears, McManus had a disastrous performance, missing two crucial field goals—one from 55 yards at the end of the second half and another from 44 yards in the fourth quarter with the score at 27–24. The Packers lost by a mere four-point margin.
Additionally, McManus missed an extra field goal attempt following a touchdown. In total, he left seven points on the board, a margin significant enough to change the outcome of the game, leaving many fans frustrated and upset.
After the game, McManus didn’t shy away from admitting his failures: "This is the worst performance of my career. I let my teammates down, and I take full responsibility."
Bisaccia’s decision to cut McManus reflects not only the disappointment in missed crucial kicks but also the need for change in the special teams unit, where McManus had been a key figure.
Though there were bright spots like punter Daniel Whelan, cutting McManus was seen as a necessary step to change the dynamic. Experts view this as a decisive move by Bisaccia to strengthen the special teams for the upcoming season.
While this decision remains controversial, the Packers' continued faith in Bisaccia and the departure of McManus signal a clear message: Green Bay is serious about reshaping the special teams unit and improving the team for the future.
