Just 3 Hours After Paying $5 Million to Leave the Jets, Star Wide Receiver Turns Down Steelers and Bears to Set His Sights on the Saints — Ready to Sign a Lifetime Deal Just to Line Up with MVP Tyler Shough

New Orleans, Louisiana – 12/17/2025

Just three hours after agreeing to pay $5 million to secure his release from the New York Jets, Allen Lazard stunned the NFL marketplace in a way few expected. Not because he became a midseason free agent — but because of his decision to walk away from major offers and focus on a single destination: the New Orleans Saints.

According to multiple league sources, Lazard received lucrative proposals from the Pittsburgh Steelers and Chicago Bears, with a combined value of up to $55 million. Yet instead of choosing the safest financial path, the 30-year-old wide receiver prioritized vision and fit — drawn to a Saints project being built around MVP Tyler Shough, a quarterback enjoying a breakout season and rapidly becoming the centerpiece of a legitimate Super Bowl push.

Lazard’s exit from the Jets was swift, closing a chapter that never fully met expectations in New York. Once viewed as a key piece, he struggled to rediscover his best form; this season he totaled eight receptions for 70 yards and one touchdown across 10 games, as the Jets missed the playoffs yet again. But for Lazard, the numbers don’t tell the whole story — and they didn’t dictate what came next.

“There were some very big offers from the Steelers and Bears, but money isn’t what keeps me in the NFL,” Lazard said. “When I watch Tyler control a game and lead the locker room, I see someone the entire team believes in. If I get the chance to line up next to an MVP like that, I’m willing to sign a lifetime contract — just to chase the games that matter most.”

That message spread quickly because it runs counter to the league’s usual logic. In an NFL where $55 million is typically impossible to refuse, Lazard chose to put culture, connection, and the ultimate goal above dollars.

For the Saints, Lazard brings precisely what they value: elite blocking as a wide receiver, tactical discipline, playoff experience, and a team-first approach. More importantly, he offers a dependable piece for an offense being shaped around Shough — a quarterback defined not only by big plays, but by steadiness in the moments that matter most.

No deal has been finalized. But when a player is willing to pay his own way into free agency, then turn down tens of millions of dollars to pursue a different path, the message is unmistakable. For Allen Lazard, the road to a Super Bowl — and the right leader to travel it with — is worth more than any number on a check.

Saints Flip the Script in the Red Zone — From the NFL’s Worst to One of the League’s Best Over the Last Three Weeks
New Orleans, Louisiana – December 19, 2025 For much of the 2025 season, every time the New Orleans Saints moved deep into opposing territory, a familiar tension settled over Caesars Superdome. The offense could move the ball effectively between the 20s, but once it reached the final 20 yards, rhythm disappeared. The red zone became the clearest weakness of the Saints in Year 1 of the Kellen Moore era — a place where opportunities consistently slipped away. Through the first 12 weeks of the season, New Orleans ranked dead last in the NFL in red zone efficiency, converting just 34.5 percent of its red zone trips into touchdowns. The number reflected more than poor execution; it exposed an offense playing cautiously, lacking decisiveness and confidence when the moment demanded it most. But as the season entered its most critical stretch, the Saints responded. Over the last three weeks, New Orleans has engineered one of the most dramatic turnarounds in the league. The Saints now rank third in the NFL in red zone offense during that span, scoring six touchdowns on eight trips inside the 20-yard line. More importantly, the surge did not come against weak competition. The Miami Dolphins entered their matchup ranked among the league’s top 10 red zone defenses, while the Carolina Panthers sat just outside that group. The Saints still converted both red zone opportunities against Miami and went 1-for-2 against Carolina. Quarterback Tyler Shough has played a central role in the turnaround, but the shift did not happen immediately when he became the starter. Shough has now started six games, and it took several weeks for the offense to find its rhythm — a clear reflection of Kellen Moore’s adjustments, particularly in short-yardage and goal-to-go situations. One of the most significant changes has been Moore’s decision to reduce the offense’s reliance on Taysom Hill in the red zone, a tendency that had made the Saints predictable earlier in the season. Instead, New Orleans has put more trust in Shough’s decision-making and the speed and decisiveness of rookie Devin Neal. Neal has scored the first two touchdowns of his NFL career over the past two weeks, both coming in short-yardage situations. Saints legend Drew Brees believes the biggest difference lies not in play design, but in mindset. “When you get into the red zone, everything happens fast and there’s no room for hesitation,” Brees said. “Three weeks ago, the Saints looked like a team that was thinking too much. Now they’re playing decisively. The quarterback knows what he wants, the play-caller trusts his decisions, and the guys with the ball are attacking with confidence. That’s not luck — that’s the sign of an offense growing up at exactly the right time.” Three weeks cannot erase every issue New Orleans has faced this season, but the transformation in the red zone has delivered a clear message. The Saints are no longer a team that unravels near the goal line. And in the NFL, sometimes finding the right answers at the right moment can change the entire direction of a season.
