Just ahead of the final matchup with the Dolphins, the NFL announces its decision on the punishment following the incident involving Drake Maye
Just ahead of the decisive Week 18 matchup with the Miami Dolphins, the NFL has officially announced the punishment related to the controversial collision involving New England Patriots quarterback Drake Maye. The news quickly drew the attention of the media and fans, as the Patriots stand on the brink of a major opportunity to secure the No. 1 seed in the AFC. The incident not only impacted the outcome of the previous game but also reignited debates surrounding player safety.
The incident occurred during the Week 17 matchup between the Patriots and the New York Jets, when Drake Maye was hit hard while attempting a pass late in the second quarter. Jets defensive end Jermaine Johnson was involved in a play that was deemed a flagrant foul, making direct contact with Maye’s head and neck area. After careful review, the NFL decided to fine Johnson $17,389 for the violation, while emphasizing that the move was intended to protect quarterbacks.

In addition to Jermaine Johnson, two other Jets players — Jordan Clark and Isaiah Davis — were also fined for unsportsmanlike conduct, including taunting and improper use of the helmet. Although no suspensions were handed down, the series of fines was viewed as a firm warning from the NFL. The league stressed that dangerous collisions, especially those involving quarterbacks, will continue to be dealt with strictly in the future.
Despite the dangerous collision, Drake Maye still delivered the best performance of his career against the Jets. He threw for 256 yards, recorded five touchdowns, and did not throw a single interception, finishing with a near-perfect passer rating. The dominant 42–10 victory not only helped the Patriots capture the AFC East title for the first time since 2019, but also strengthened Maye’s position in the MVP race this season.
As the Patriots prepare to enter their final game against the Dolphins, the NFL’s disciplinary decision only adds to the intensity of this crucial stage of the season. Drake Maye is currently viewed as the leading candidate for the MVP award, and all eyes will be on his performance in Week 18. With his current form, Maye is not only the future of the Patriots, but also a new symbol of the NFL.
