OC Josh McDaniels Reveals the Play That Made Him Realize Drake Maye Was “A Special Talent” After Outstanding Performances from the Start of the Season
Foxborough, Massachusetts – Drake Maye’s breakout in his second season has forced the entire NFL to take notice, and no one has seen that explosion more clearly than Offensive Coordinator Josh McDaniels. With the Patriots surging back into the AFC’s top contention, McDaniels has delivered his strongest praise yet for his protégé, the player who’s emerging as one of the most dangerous quarterbacks in 2025.

McDaniels recounted that the moment he realized Maye wasn’t like any young QB came right at training camp. In one practice, when the play completely broke down, Maye scrambled to the right sideline, seemingly about to run out of bounds or throw the ball away. But instead of giving up, he unleashed a deep ball over 60 yards, dropping perfectly into DeMario Douglas’ hands for a touchdown. “That play made me freeze. I thought ‘No way,’ but Drake turned the impossible into the ordinary,” McDaniels recalled.
According to McDaniels, what makes Maye “special” isn’t just his arm strength, but his ability to handle pressure and make decisions in chaotic moments – something few young QBs can do. The Patriots have far exceeded preseason expectations, and McDaniels believes Maye’s extraordinary growth is the biggest reason. “He makes everything look so easy. That’s the sign of a rare player,” he emphasized.
The Patriots currently hold an 11-2 record, tied for first in the NFL, and Maye has entered the MVP race in convincing fashion. His progress is seen as the turning point that helped the team overcome two tough seasons prior. Everything Maye has shown – from poise and physical strength to highlight-making ability – was already evident in preseason, but McDaniels admits he didn’t expect it all to come together so quickly.
When asked what makes him believe Maye is ready to be the long-term foundation of the Patriots, McDaniels didn’t hesitate to answer. “I’ve worked with a lot of great quarterbacks, but Drake has something different. He has the size, the talent, but most importantly, the heart of a leader. With him, we’re not just talking about the future – we’re seeing it right in front of our eyes,” McDaniels affirmed.
