Patriots Owner Robert Kraft Criticizes Senator Chuck Schumer After “Tone-Deaf” Buffalo Bills–Tinged Remarks While Addressing the Bondi Beach Tragedy
The NFL community continues to erupt following controversial remarks made by Senator Chuck Schumer referencing the Buffalo Bills’ victory, delivered while he was speaking about the mass shooting tragedy at Bondi Beach in Sydney. This time, the backlash intensified when Robert Kraft, owner of the New England Patriots and one of the most influential voices in the league, publicly weighed in.
Chuck Schumer: “Of course, I’m going to say a few words about the terrible shooting in Australia, okay? So, and first, of course, as I always say, no matter what, go Bills! They beat the Patriots today. It’s a big deal.” 😐pic.twitter.com/1gaV35HCjD

Kraft, who has long been involved in community initiatives and anti-violence efforts, said the timing and choice of words used by Schumer were unacceptable. In his view, sports—despite their broad influence—should never be placed alongside or inserted into conversations about humanitarian tragedies. Especially given that the incident in Sydney has been classified as a terrorist attack targeting the Jewish community, respect and empathy should have been paramount.
In his statement, Kraft emphasized that the NFL has long represented values that extend far beyond the field—unity, social responsibility, and compassion. “In moments when the world is hurting from loss, what’s needed most is listening, empathy, and absolute respect. Bringing sports into the conversation in that way is inappropriate, and it runs counter to the values that the NFL and our teams work tirelessly to uphold.”
Kraft’s comments were met with widespread support from Patriots fans as well as many neutral observers. On social media, numerous users said his words captured the feelings of those who were offended by Schumer’s remarks. For them, this was no longer about the Bills versus the Patriots, but about drawing a moral line during moments of profound grief.
At more than 80 years old, Robert Kraft once again demonstrated why he is regarded as a leadership figure within the NFL. As the league becomes increasingly intertwined with broader social issues, Kraft’s criticism sent a clear message: the NFL may deliver joy, passion, and fierce competition—but in the face of human loss, respect and humanity must always come first.
