QB Josh Allen Challenges Coach Sean McDermott’s Decision to Prevent a Talented Young CB with Over 200 Career Tackles from Moving to Safety – Are the Bills Holding Back His True Potential?
Buffalo, New York – November 14, 2025
Josh Allen has spoken out against a decision made by Head Coach Sean McDermott and some members of the Buffalo Bills' front office regarding preventing young talent Christian Benford from trying out at the safety position, even though he has shown impressive skills at cornerback. Benford, who has excelled in the cornerback role, but Allen believes that testing him at safety could bring significant benefits to the team.

Allen stated:
"I don’t get why they killed the plan to move him to safety. He’s got the perfect frame for it – over 200 career tackles prove it. Bills need that power and versatility now. Blocking his switch is holding back his full potential."
Benford, despite being a promising cornerback with standout statistics such as 64 tackles (leading all CBs for the Bills), 2 interceptions, including a crucial pick against Tua Tagovailoa and a stop on Tyreek Hill, has proven his ability and versatility in his defensive role. He also has 10 passes defended, 2 forced fumbles, and 1 sack, marking his first-ever sack in the NFL. With a PFF grade of 82.5, Benford ranks as one of the top 15 cornerbacks in the NFL.
Allen emphasized that the team needs to seize every opportunity to develop young talent, rather than confining them to a fixed role. Testing players in various positions will make the team more flexible and create new tactical opportunities, leading to greater success in the future.
Although Benford has succeeded at cornerback, testing him at safety could open up more opportunities for the team in building its defensive strategy. Allowing players to try different positions not only helps the team grow but also brings diversity to the strategy.
Whether Benford will be tested at safety in upcoming games depends on the decisions of the Bills' front office. However, the ongoing debate over how to utilize young talent will undoubtedly remain an important factor in the team’s development strategy for this season.
