Republican Gubernatorial Candidates Weigh in on Bears' Threat to Move to Indiana After "Intentional Delay" of New Stadium Project
Chicago, Illinois
The threat from the Chicago Bears to move the team to Indiana instead of staying at Soldier Field has stirred up the political landscape in Illinois, particularly among Republican gubernatorial candidates. The three leading candidates in the upcoming race for governor have voiced their concerns about the delays in approving the new stadium project in Arlington Heights, seeing it as a reflection of poor leadership and mismanagement by state officials.

Rick Heidner, one of the candidates, strongly opposed the delay. He stated that if he were governor, he would accelerate the development of the infrastructure necessary for the project. Heidner emphasized that a new stadium with a dome would not only bring hundreds of millions in tax revenue but would also spur economic growth in the surrounding area, including hotels, restaurants, and entertainment services.

Ted Dabrowski, the former head of Wirepoints, criticized Illinois’ leadership for creating an environment that is not conducive to keeping major sports teams and corporations, leading to the Bears exploring options elsewhere. Dabrowski argued that the fact that the Bears are considering a move to Indiana is a clear sign of the state’s inability to attract and retain important assets like the Bears.
Darren Bailey, a GOP candidate for governor, stated that Illinois cannot afford to lose the Bears and blamed Governor JB Pritzker for the team’s discussions with Indiana. Bailey pointed out that Illinois provided a tax break to lure Boeing’s headquarters from Seattle to Chicago, but Boeing eventually left, highlighting the business-unfriendly environment in the state. He warned that without immediate action, Illinois could lose a major asset.

George McCaskey, owner of the Bears, also made his position clear. He strongly expressed:
“We cannot continue to stay in a state that does not value what we bring to the table. If the government can’t provide us with the right environment to grow, we will have no choice but to look elsewhere. Illinois is facing a hard truth — we will not be delayed forever.”
Meanwhile, James Mendrick, DuPage County Sheriff and gubernatorial candidate, emphasized that any decision regarding the Bears’ future must start with a detailed and transparent plan from the organization. Mendrick stressed that public feedback and careful evaluation are necessary before any decisions are made.
Despite differing opinions, one thing is clear: Bears are putting Illinois in a difficult position. All the gubernatorial candidates agree that if immediate action is not taken, Illinois risks losing one of its most valuable sports assets and significant tax revenue from the team.
