SAD NEWS: Former Patriots fourth-round NFL Draft pick passes away at 56 after being identified as a victim in a series of serious homicide cases in Los Angeles
LOS ANGELES, California – The NFL community is mourning after confirming that Kevin Johnson, a former player selected by the New England Patriots in the fourth round of the 1993 NFL Draft, has died at the age of 56. He was identified as a victim in a serious homicide case currently under investigation in Los Angeles.
Johnson’s body was discovered near a homeless encampment area in late January. Authorities said he suffered severe head trauma and multiple stab wounds. Investigators believe the case may be connected to other killings that have occurred in the area over recent months.

Johnson entered the NFL with high aspirations after his collegiate career at Texas Southern. Although his professional tenure in New England did not last long, he was recognized as a hardworking and dedicated player who always put the team above himself during a transitional era for the franchise in the 1990s.
After leaving the Patriots, Johnson went on to play for the Philadelphia Eagles and several other teams in the mid-1990s. Former teammates remember him as a disciplined defensive back who worked quietly and was always willing to sacrifice for the team’s collective success.
Patriots owner Robert Kraft shared an emotional statement following the tragic news: “He may have only been in New England for a short time, but he will always be a part of the Patriots family. We value everyone who has worn this uniform, and today we extend our deepest gratitude and prayers to his family.”
Family and friends described Johnson as a devoted father, compassionate and deeply caring toward others. His son said his father was willing to give the shirt off his back to help anyone in need, regardless of the circumstances. Those memories now serve as comfort amid profound loss.
As the investigation continues and justice remains ahead, Johnson’s passing is a reminder to the NFL of the fragile reality beyond the stadium lights. For the Patriots and those who witnessed his journey, Kevin Johnson will be remembered not only as a player, but as a man of character.
