The Green Bay Packers Officially Make Their Final Decision on Josh Jacobs After Saying Goodbye to Thousand-Yard Star Emanuel Wilson
Wilson has just become an unrestricted free agent after two commendable seasons in a backup role. He recorded nearly 500 rushing yards each season and delivered notable performances, especially a 107-yard game against the Minnesota Vikings. However, Green Bay chose to let him test the open market instead of retaining negotiating rights.

This was not an emotional decision. It was a strategic move. By not keeping Wilson at a tender exceeding $3.5 million, the Packers are optimizing cap space and placing full focus on Jacobs — who is viewed as the foundation of the offensive system under Matt LaFleur.
At the 2026 NFL Combine, general manager Brian Gutekunst previously shut down any speculation about cutting Jacobs to save $11.4 million in cap space. He made it clear: “Absolutely. He is a very important piece of what we are building here.”

On-field performance further reinforces that stance. Despite dealing with knee issues in his first season in Green Bay, Jacobs still exploded for 1,671 total yards and 16 touchdowns. He proved he is not just a running back, but the true engine of the offense.
Jacobs still has two years remaining on the four-year, $48 million contract he signed in 2024. If he maintains elite form, the Packers could consider an early extension. If not, he would enter free agency in 2027 at age 30 — a sensitive age for a running back.
Regardless of how the future unfolds, the Packers have made a decisive choice in the present. Parting ways with Emanuel Wilson is not a sign of weakness, but a declaration of confidence. Josh Jacobs is RB1, the cornerstone, and the player entrusted to lead Green Bay into its next chapter.
