Yankees Reportedly Pursuing $12M Former MVP, 4-Time Gold Glover, 7-Time All-Star Veteran

New York, New York – February 4, 2026

After an offseason focused on bringing back one of their key stars, the New York Yankees are reportedly turning their attention to another veteran free agent who could provide a boost to their roster. Following the successful re-signing of Cody Bellinger, the Yankees are now pursuing a potential deal with one of the most accomplished veterans still on the market: Paul Goldschmidt.

Goldschmidt, the 38-year-old former MVP and four-time Gold Glove winner, remains a highly productive player, even in the twilight of his career. The first baseman, who played 146 games for the Yankees in 2025, posted a solid .731 OPS, showing an improvement over his .716 OPS in 2024. Goldschmidt added 10 home runs and 45 RBIs to his totals while continuing to display his reliable defense at first base.

According to MLB insider Jon Heyman of the New York Post, the Yankees are still interested in bringing Goldschmidt back for another season, but with a new role. The veteran would serve primarily as a designated hitter (DH) or bench option, with the Yankees shifting focus to Ben Rice as the team’s first baseman of the future.

Veteran Leadership and a Familiar Face

The Yankees had initially made the decision to let Goldschmidt walk in favor of Rice, but the idea of adding the 7-time All-Star back to the roster is intriguing. Goldschmidt’s experience and leadership could be invaluable, especially when it comes to his presence in the clubhouse and his extensive playoff experience. Should the deal go through, Goldschmidt would bring a wealth of knowledge and stability to a team already confident in its current roster.

“Goldschmidt’s leadership cannot be understated,” said a source within the Yankees’ front office. “He brings a wealth of experience and is a proven winner, something we could always use more of as we continue to chase championships.”

The Yankees have made it clear that they are always looking to improve, even after signing Bellinger to a five-year, $162.5 million contract earlier this offseason. Bellinger, widely regarded as one of the most versatile defenders in the league, will remain in the Bronx after a lengthy standoff between both sides. The deal, which includes opt-outs after the second and third seasons, a $20 million signing bonus, and a full no-trade clause, was a significant move for the Yankees as they solidified their outfield.

Goldschmidt’s Potential Impact on the Yankees

While the Goldschmidt pursuit is still in its early stages, the idea of reuniting with the former MVP is one that makes sense for the Yankees, given their need for depth in the lineup. Adding Goldschmidt would provide an additional right-handed bat to complement their current roster and give them a versatile option for the DH position. His leadership and ability to perform under pressure would make him a valuable asset come playoff time.

For the Yankees, the pursuit of Goldschmidt is not just about improving the roster — it’s also about maintaining continuity and leadership within the team. Adding another familiar face to the mix could help elevate the team as they aim to strengthen their chances of making a deep playoff run in 2026.

As the offseason continues, all eyes will be on the potential deal between the Yankees and Goldschmidt. With Bellinger already back in the fold, the addition of Goldschmidt could solidify the team’s position as one of the most dangerous lineups in the league.

New York Yankees Re-sign Gold Glove Award OF Just 12 Hours After Cutting Contract
February 6, 2026 The New York Yankees have made their move to bring back outfielder Austin Slater after his short stint with the team last year. The New York Yankees achieved their primary objective of the offseason after re-signing Cody Bellinger last month. However, they have not made any other major additions to their roster as yet. The Yankees fans accuse the front office of running the team back from last year since they have mostly focused on renewing expiring contracts and handing out pre-arbitration deals. According to MLB insider Jon Heyman, the New York Yankees are keen to bring back Austin Slater into the clubhouse for the 2026 season. They reportedly made the outfielder a one-year, $1 million offer on Thursday. Slater bounced around the MLB over the past couple of seasons, playing for five different organizations during this period. “The Yankees have made a one year, $1M offer to Austin Slater according to Jon Heyman,” Everything Yankees posted on X. Slater signed a one-year, $1.75 million contract with the Chicago White Sox ahead of the 2025 campaign. They traded him to the Yankees at the deadline after getting 11 home runs with a 100 OPS+ for the team in 51 games. However, Slater made little impression in New York, going 3-25 in his 14 appearances for the team, so it’s rather surprising they want a reunion with him. The 22-year-old lost his spot in the lineup last year as Trent Grisham delivered a stellar campaign to seal his berth on the team. So, the Yankees may decide to use their former top prospect as a trade chip this offseason to fill other needs on their roster. “It’s not exactly up to the Yankees to worry about Domínguez’s future. If they see him as a valuable bench player, or if they want him as injury insurance, that’s their prerogative. But at this point in his career, the former top prospect likely would be better served by playing every day in the majors,” Kuty wrote. That was the Yankees’ plan for him last year until Grisham proved he could be an everyday threat at the plate, eating into Dominguez’s playing time. Would another team consider now the right time to “buy” on Domínguez in exchange for help the Yankees may need elsewhere?” Kuty wrote. In spite of making his MLB debut in 2023, Dominguez only exceeded rookie status last year, as huge injuries hampered his development in the MLB. He played 20 games in a season for only the first time in 2025. Dominguez hit .257/.331/.388 in his first full season for the Yankees with 10 home runs, 23 stolen bases, and a 101 OPS+.
